Who should see a cardiologist

You do not need to be sure something is wrong with your heart. If you have any of the problems below, or are unsure, it is reasonable to ask for an assessment.

  • Chest pain or pressure

Pain, tightness or heaviness in the chest, especially when walking, climbing stairs or under stress.

  • Breathlessness

Getting short of breath with activity that you used to manage easily, or when lying flat.

  • Palpitations or irregular heartbeat

A racing, pounding or skipping heartbeat, or a pulse that feels uneven.

  • Dizziness or fainting

Light-headedness, blackouts or fainting spells, particularly without a clear cause.

  • High blood pressure

Readings that are often high, or blood pressure that is hard to control on medicines.

  • High cholesterol or family history of heart disease

High cholesterol, or a parent or sibling who had a heart attack or heart disease at a young age.

  • Swelling of the feet or heart failure

Swollen feet or ankles, tiredness and breathlessness, or a known diagnosis of heart failure.

  • Follow-up after a stent, bypass or heart attack

Regular review of your medicines, tests and recovery after a heart procedure or heart attack.

  • Check-up before surgery

A heart assessment before an operation (pre-operative clearance), especially if you are older or have other conditions.

Severe chest pain is an emergency. Do not wait for an appointment: see what to do in an emergency.
