What the test shows

An ECG records the electrical signals that make your heart beat, using small electrodes on the chest, arms and legs. It is short, painless and non-invasive.

It is one of the tests done in the clinic's procedure room, along with echocardiography and the treadmill stress test. The doctor decides which test, if any, is right for you.

  • RhythmWhether the heartbeat is regular

  • RateHow fast the heart is beating

  • Electrical patternSigns that may point to strain or an earlier heart attack
