What the test shows

Some heart problems only show up when the heart is working harder. During a TMT, an ECG and your blood pressure are recorded while you walk on a treadmill at a gradually increasing pace and incline, so the doctor can see how your heart responds to exertion.

It is one of the tests done in the clinic's procedure room, along with echocardiography and a resting ECG. The doctor decides which test, if any, is right for you.

  • ECGYour heart's electrical activity, recorded throughout the walk

  • Blood pressureChecked as the walk gets harder

  • Pace and inclineIncreased gradually, in stages

Who the test is for

A TMT is done only when the doctor advises it, after he has seen you. These are some of the usual reasons, in general terms.

The procedure room, with the echocardiography machine, an examination bed and the treadmill
The procedure room, where the test is done
  • Chest pain, tightness or discomfort that comes on with walking or climbing stairs
  • Breathlessness or tiredness with activity that seems out of proportion
  • Palpitations or dizziness that appear during exertion
  • Follow-up after a heart attack, stent or bypass, to see how much activity is safe
  • Checking the heart when there are risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease

What happens on the day

Here is what to expect, step by step, from arriving at the clinic to getting your report.

  1. Step 1: Arrive

Come up to the clinic on the first floor, above Apollo Pharmacy. You will be asked about your symptoms, and your blood pressure is checked at rest.

  2. Step 2: Electrodes

Small sticky electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to the ECG, and a blood pressure cuff goes on your arm.

  3. Step 3: Walk

You walk on the treadmill while the ECG records. The pace and incline rise gradually, in stages. Tell the doctor at once if you feel unwell.

  4. Step 4: Recovery

When the walk ends you rest, and the ECG and blood pressure keep recording until they settle.

  5. Step 5: Report

The doctor reviews the recording and explains what it shows. You get the report the same day.
