What the scan shows

An echo uses ultrasound to make moving pictures of your heart as it beats. It is painless and non-invasive, and lets the doctor see the heart's chambers, valves and pumping action.

It is one of the tests done in the clinic's procedure room, along with a resting ECG and the treadmill stress test. The doctor decides which test, if any, is right for you.

  • ChambersTheir size, and how the walls move with each beat

  • ValvesHow they open and close

  • Pumping actionHow well the heart pumps blood

Who the scan is for

An echo is done when Dr. Rangaraj R advises it after seeing you, or when another doctor refers you for one. These are some of the usual reasons, in general terms.

  • Breathlessness, tiredness or swelling of the ankles
  • A heart murmur heard during an examination
  • Checking how well the heart pumps after a heart attack
  • Follow-up of a known valve problem
  • Seeing how long-standing high blood pressure has affected the heart

What happens on the day

Here is what to expect, step by step, from lying down for the scan to getting your report.

  1. Step 1: Lie down

You lie on the examination bed, usually turned onto your left side. Small ECG stickers may be placed on your chest.

  2. Step 2: Scan

Gel is put on your chest and a small probe is moved over it to see the heart from different angles.

  3. Step 3: Report

The doctor explains what the scan shows. You get the report the same day.
